Yellow Edge’s second summer exhibition

By Chief Correspondent Rob Thomas

THE Yellow Edge Gallery in Stoke Road, Gosport will be opening its second summer exhibition next Saturday – July 31 – with the promise of a mixture of paintings, and jewellery on display.

The co-director of the contemporary art gallery, Steve Buggle, told The Globe the Summer 21 Two exhibition will feature work by 29 artists from different parts of Hampshire.

However, he admitted: “We know most of the artists that are exhibiting but we haven’t seen what they will be exhibiting. They are brand new pieces of work and will include watercolours, oil paintings, and abstracts, and there will be the standing collection of artistic jewellery.”

It will include the paintings of Fareham’s Paul Harber, a contemporary figurative artist who has exhibited at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters exhibition in the Mall Galleries near Buckingham Palace.

Named after a painting by American artist Barnett Newman, Yellow Edge was established in the Stoke Road shop in 2019 and aims to foster and promote the community of local artists.

There is a membership scheme for the artists and, as well as exhibitions, the ‘community’ is being extended by building relationships with schools, colleges and art groups, and by holding talks and lectures on a variety of subjects.

The gallery is ‘not commercial’, and Steve Buggle said: “We have a group of people who regularly help out at the gallery and we ask the artists if they can help because its nice when people come in and are able to talk to the artists.”

Entry to the exhibitions is free and much of the work on display is available for purchase. The opening times, as usual, are: 11am to 3pm Monday to Friday, and between 12 noon and 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

After Summer 21 Two, Steve Buggle highlighted the forthcoming exhibition by Lee Art Group from August 21 to 30 and in September, “an exhibition by Royal College of Art and Portsmouth based painter Charlotte Brisland.  Charlotte has exhibited in London, New York, Japan, Berlin and will be having a solo show of recent works here in Gosport at Yellow Edge Gallery 11 – 19 September.”
