Picture Special: Standing with Giants

STANDING WITH GIANTS is an outdoor art installation that is currently based within the historic grounds and ramparts of Fort Nelson; acting as a sombre tribute for those who were killed in the 1982 “Falklands Conflict“. It features the total of 258 life-size silhouettes which symbolise all 255 British task force members alongside three Falkland Island civilians.

This installation was made as part of a “community project” with the same name, which was set up during 2019 by Dan Barton and a small team of volunteers. It was originally designed to mark forty years since this historic conflict and has been touring the United Kingdom ever since; each of the individual silhouettes made using recycled building materials.

Residents can view the art installation for free until September 3, 2023 although they must register a ‘booking’ from this link before arrival due to the area’s limited capacity. Members of the Globe editorial team visited earlier this weekend to visit the silhouettes and small exhibition showing media coverage from 1982; taking the photos that can be seen below.
