Pub culture exhibition venue calls for local artists

By Connor Steel

LOCAL artists and creative makers are being asked to contribute to an exciting new exhibition later this summer.

It will celebrate Gosport pub culture and heritage of the town’s ‘watering holes’ in a two-week show at the Yellow Edge Gallery scheduled for August 15-29.

The collection has been entitled ‘Time at the Bar please, an exhibition of pub culture’ and organisers are hoping that local residents can contribute their art for display. There is no deadline yet on when the artwork must be submitted, with further announcements in due course.

And contributors will get complete freedom in their creations with any relationship to pubs welcomed. Some suggested themes include favourite tipples, events, memories, laughter, sports, sounds, smell, regular faces frequenting the bar or even the bricks and mortar on the outside.

There are also no limits on mediums with some ideas including photography, knitted, paintings, model items, posters, artefacts, vintage, typography or even 3D outcomes. Organisers have further said the creations can be any size and don’t need to be framed unless that is preferred.

An entry fee for the first piece submitted will be £30 to all contributors, whilst all subsequent entries have been priced at £15 each. However interested parties cannot claim any commission fees from sales made, with contributions being offered for their creations once the display ends.

The exhibition will be run in partnership with Hampshire Open Studios and is set to receive advertising space in its published brochure, alongside marketing through the gallery’s mailing list and further media materials in the run up to the event.

Organisers are hoping to open the exhibition for a private showing before its first public viewing on August 14, but this has not yet been confirmed and is in the early stages of planning. For any questions or expressions of interest readers can email pubculture2022@gmail.com and await a response.

Yellow Edge Gallery opened in 2019 and is located at 107 Stoke Road, with car park facilities and good public transport links. It is also open seven days a week, although times do vary with weekend and weekday opening schedules. More information can be found via the link or by phoning 07579 768376.
